Samsung is preemptively taking legal action against Oura, a leader in the smart ring market.
What prompted the tech giant to sue Oura?
Samsung is going to launch the Galaxy Ring soon. Hence, it wants to clear the path for its new product without any legal hurdles.
Samsung alleges that Oura has a history of suing competitors over common smart ring features, like sensors and electronics. Oura has even sued companies like Ultrahuman, Circular, and RingConn. Oura did it sometimes even before their products hit the US market.
Before the Galaxy Ring’s launch, Samsung sought a declaratory judgement. It states that it’s not infringing on five of Oura’s patents. These patents are all about smart ring technology, including design, manufacturing methods, and user readiness score assessment.
The lawsuit also reveals Samsung’s plan to start selling the Galaxy Ring in the US from August.
Samsung wants the backing of a court ruling for the smooth launch and sale of the Galaxy Ring without fear of legal action from Oura.
Second, they want to get a court order preventing Oura from filing any patent lawsuits against Samsung or its customers related to the Galaxy Ring.
If the court’s ruling favours Samsung, it could encourage more competition and give smaller companies some breathing room.
As for the Galaxy Ring, rumours suggest it will debut at Samsung’s Unpacked event on July 10.
